I’m writing a book right now, and this describes it perfectly. 

One day, I’m making a ton of forward progress.

Next day, I’m hitting backspace and deleting half the stuff I wrote. 

At first, this was annoying. It felt like I was regressing. But this metaphor of a combination lock is right on. Sometimes you gotta go forwards and backwards to make progress. 

The setback becomes the setup.
